In 2005 JK Rowling answered fans` questions on MuggleNet and The Leaky Cauldron. One of many was:
Melissa Anelli: Oh, here`s one [from our forums] that I`ve really got to ask you. Has Snape ever been loved by anyone?
JKR: Yes, he has, which in some ways makes him more culpable even than Voldemort, who never has.
So who loved Snape?
While reading chapter 33 The Prince`s Tale (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) we encounter Mary twice (page 540 and 542, Bloomsbury). Both memories depict crucial moments in Snape`s school life. Why has JK Rowling invented a new girl-character in the most reread chapter among Snape`s fans AND given her a name?
It was Mary Macdonald who loved Severus Snape in my humble opinion. Now I would like to prove it.
Why did Mulciber attack Mary Macdonald with Dark Magic?
Maybe she was a Mudblood. Or maybe her love to Snape was obvious which made them laugh. Lily said that Mulciber tried to do to Mary Macdonald something and it was Dark Magic. What if Mary knew about Lupin and Snape had a Grim. So Mary begged Snape not to go after Lupin at night? And Mulciber trying to stop her hoisted Mary into the air and taunted her. It was a well-known Dark joke. Then Marauders tried to do the same thing to Snape – the inventor of the spell – to revenge for Gryffindor Macdonald.
When asked after Mary Severus simultaneously told Lily about Potter.
James was the first to come in Snape`s mind in that quarrel. It seems to me that they both knew that Potter loved Lily and Mary loved Snape.
Why it was Mary who alerted Lily to the fact that Severus was intending to spend the night outside the entrance to the Gryffindor Common Room?
Why did she speak to Mulciber`s friend and obey to call Gryffindor Evans whom he had insulted? After all that had happened before that night, Mary must had been outrageous with Snape. But she obeyed. Only loving heart can forgive everything.
Why did Mary risk to speak to a rule-breaker wandering at night herself and not telling a teacher on duty that dangerous Slytherin was at the door? She was not afraid of Snape. She was waiting for him on purpose. I suppose Mary wanted Lily to stop her friendship with Snape because she was jealous. Also she was there to cover Snape and to save his neck if the teacher came.
Why was Mary fond of Snape?
Lily might tell her that Snape was the first to inform her she was a witch. Which is romantic, isn`t it?
Lily has made excuses for Snape for years. What exactly did she tell of Severus?
Clever Snape knew much more than most of students. Isn`t it an attractive feature? Also he invented stuff.
What if young Snape had an absolutely fantastic smile? For example page 535 A little smile twisted Snape`s mouth when she said his name. When they were together Snape was happy and more admirable I believe.
Why has Mary Macdonald appeared in the end of the story?
I assume that this new character was born because of adoration which Snape`s fans demonstrated all the time. Maybe JK Rowling was impressed by fans` loyalty and had created a character who was in love with Snape in spite of his Death Eater friends and greasy hair.
Why is Snape culpable according to JK Rowling?
Snape knew what disappointed love was. But he had no compassion to a person in the similar situation. He knew about Mulciber and Mary and that was nothing for him. It was a laugh, that`s all -
(Page 593) `He desired her, that was all`, sneered Voldemort, `but when she had gone, he agreed that there were other women, and of purer blood, worthier of him - ` Who were they? Or she?
Maybe Mary Macdonald was a Pure-blood eager to marry Half-blood Snape with his lack of fortune? Gryffindor was not a problem. Peter Pettigrew was a Gryffindor who helped Voldemort to return. I suppose that after Lily`s murder Snape himself had shown another girl as an evidence that he had forgotten the Mudblood. It was important for Dumbledore`s spy to prove his faithfulness to the Dark Lord.
